Some things that can expedite recovery after a hard race and a long and lengthy travel can be as follows… Schedule a massage and compress your legs upon arrival to the race and back home. After races my legs are screaming during the flight home and there is nothing you can do about it but step out of your seat from time to time and stretch out. My travel to both races went smoothly but travel can be taxing. There are so many variables that are out of the control of the passenger and you can’t do anything about it accept show up for your flight and prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Travel: Traveling to races is a sport in itself that one, including myself, will never master. Again, less training, more sleeping and a proper diet including liquid recovery beverages such as my favorite, First Endurance Cappuccino Ultragen in copious amounts will be the method I employ for any future tight racing schedule back to back competitions. Although racing in great cities throughout the US is quite fun, it is not a vacation and showing up ready to fire is the name of the game. It is no fun forcing training sessions while exhausted but racing in different time zones does provide that unique challenge. I will implement a day or two off with proper sleep and naps to get back into normal sleeping patterns after each race I feel I deprived myself from legitimate sleep. Sleep: After a 3 AM Central Time wake up for Kemah International I spent the majority of the week getting back onto my normal sleep schedule which took a tool on me. Stretch out, get a massage and maybe go for a short ride run with a swim here and there but only to make your body feel like you did something and provide that stimulus to your body that you have trained so to speak. What the body goes through in a tough race may not come out till mid week after the race and fatigue needs to be honored if success is what you are after seven days after a tough race effort. Sure, there is a time for high volume and heavy training blocks, but when you are in between races and feel that a hard effort or a hard day is in order you may want to reconsider. The old saying that “He who cares the least, wins,” can hold true from time to time being that less is more the majority of the time with training and other things that life in general has to offer. Sometimes I am overly motivated and that can come back to bite when things matter the most. I will outline some typical experiences and include the lessons learned or tips in the paragraphs below.įirst of all, 99% of triathletes are motivated and that includes me. ![]() More importantly, I was able to learn a lot about my strategy for dealing with recovery in between races after having not been as successful as I would have liked to have been. I went on to place 12th at South Beach Life Time so clearly performing well in the second race of a back to back weekend can be done, it just did not go as smoothly for me the second time around although the effort and motivation to perform were clearly there. Chris went onto win the Texas 70.3 after placing 3rd and having been 35 seconds in front of me at Kemah. With Kemah International being the first of two races back to back, I feel that this event went well for me with a 4th place behind a solid field including Yoder, Bazzone and Lieto. ![]() That is what it takes to continue to progress in triathlon which has become extremely professional and competitive on the highest level. Although I have been competing for quite some time, I feel that I am still learning and will always be learning and formulating new strategies to raise my game and perform at a higher level. Back to back weekend racing is a challenge that most professional triathletes face in there career and offers a unique challenge with travel and recovery in between races. The past week and a half of racing, traveling, preparing and recovering has been an exercise in time management as well as recovery and attempting to handle all off the small details that racing professional triathlon presents itself with.
